After a great demonstration of faith and courage in chapter 14, Abram finds himself dealing with fear and discouragement as he waits on the promise of God. God stilled Abram's fears and comforted his heart by His Word. We see in verse 6 that Abrams faith in the LORD and in the LORD's ability to accomplish His promise was accounted to him for righteousness. Paul will highlight the significance of this verse in Romans 4:1-5 as he makes a case for righteousness apart from the works of the law.

And though Abram believed, he still sought assurance from God of the promise. And God graciously condescended to Abram's request and "cut" a covenant with Abram. We see that God's presence passed through those sacrifices by Himself, communicating that this covenant was solely based on God's faithfulness.

The covenant that Christ has made with us is also solely based upon His faithfulness.  It's a covenant in His blood alone. He alone took our sins upon Himself. He alone provides a righteousness for us that we could never earn.  We simply look to Christ and His work with the same faith that Abram had, and it will be accounted to us for righteousness as well.
