When the New Testament was written there were no chapter breaks. Chapter 20:1 begins with the word "For..." which tells us that Jesus is connecting this parable of the vineyard is being directly connected to what Jesus had just spoken to the disciples at the end of chapter 19. Specifically, Jesus gives this parable to expound upon the kingdom principle that He gave in Matt 19:30: "But many who are first will be last, and the last first.".

Jesus shows the disciples the attitude we should have when entering His service.  Are we approaching God on the basis of our merit, or His grace?  Do we trust Him enough to serve Him by faith, and rest in the fact that He will give us whatever is right?
