Jesus uses the encounter with the rich young ruler as a teaching opportunity for His disciples. Those that are rich are often viewed as being clearly blessed and favored by God. Having money can make many things in life easier to do, but Jesus tells the disciples that trusting in riches proves to be a great hindrance when it comes to entering the kingdom of God.

Peter then asks what reward they who had forsaken all to follow Jesus would have to look forward to. Matthew records that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man would sit on the throne of His glory, that those who had followed Him would sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel! Jesus also went on to say that everyone who has counted the cost and followed Him would be recompensed, both in this life and the life to come!
