The disciples have already been though one lesson on storms in Matthew 8:23-27 where Jesus was with them in the boat, but asleep. This time Jesus isn't visibly present with them in the boat, but on a mountain alone praying.

We can take great comfort in this passage knowing that Jesus sees our struggles, and ever lives to make intercession for us. Jesus miraculously steps into this storm and comforts His disciples with His word - "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." or literally "Be taking courage! I am! Stop fearing!"
